Jenkins Marine - Farewell to a Hard Working Friend

Hopper barge Hop has been sold Jenkins Marine said a fond farewell to its hopper barge "Hop" this month which is leaving the company's fleet after a decade of reliable service .

Built locally in Poole at BOLSON'S Shipyard on New Quay Road in 1955, She was one of three hopper barges (Hop, Skip & Jump!), built for the Poole Harbour Commission who owned and operated her until Jenkins Marine Bought her in 1999. At Jenkins Marine she underwent somewhat of a refit and was significantly adapted and upgraded including converting her from a dumb barge into a self-propelled barge, and adding accommodation, hydraulics and generators. Since that time she has been a pivotal part of Jenkins Marine's operations both locally and around the UK; a recent example being her work in Aberdeen for 6 months for the Aberdeen Port Authority.

Nab at work near Poole Company Director Dan Jenkins said she had now been replaced by the two split hopper barges Nab & Needles, which have proved to be very popular in their 5 years of operations with Jenkins Marine due to their speed and manoeuvrability. Also the recent addition of the remote control split hopper barge SHM5, which has proved very useful in more restricted sites and harbour works

But he added; "Hop's days are by no means over. She has been sold and delivered to the sunnier climes of Portugal where she will begin work in the region as soon as she arrives."
