NEWSSummer 2009 - Making Waves!
This summer, Jenkins Marine will once again quite literally be making waves! We will be returning to assist the completion of the
second phase of marine construction of Europe's first artificial surf reef at Boscombe Beach, near Bournemouth, Dorset. New Zealand based
surf reef design and construction contractors, ASR ltd, have come over to the UK to manage this unique marine project. The reef is
constructed from a combination of a custom made permeable geotextile bags and sand pumped directly from the local beach. When complete
the bags will act as a permanent reef which will help to increase the size of breaking waves for surfers.
Jenkins Marine are the preferred supplier of marine plant for the works and have committed their Multi-cat type 30m x 9m workboat 'Doreen Dorward' for marine phase of the project. Doreen Dorward will be used to assist the deployment of the individual geotextile reef sections using a three point spud leg system to hold position, and a triple drum 10t deck winch to stretch out these large reef sections against heavy duty mooring blocks. A 20t/m hydraulic deck crane temporarily fitted to the barge provides a convenient means of handling the mooring blocks, pumps and any other materials required. BACK
