NewsJenkins Marine - And The Pirates Of Poole
Jenkins Marine are delighted to announce their support this year for the Pirates of Poole charity row - an ambitious journey along the South coast of England. But far from being real pirates, you will be relieved to hear, the Pirates of Poole in their own words; "stalk the streets and events of Poole and its surrounding area demanding money with a smile and raising thousands of pounds for local charities in the process".
On the 15th of May 2010 members of the organisation intend to row a 32 foot Cornish gig from Lands End to Poole Quay dressed, naturally, as pirates. The crew have been training since December for the 250 mile journey which will take just over 2 weeks to complete and will see them stop at a number of harbours and seaside resorts. Throughout this time Jenkins Marine will be providing and operating a safety support vessel under the guidance of Rod Jenkins, Managing Director of Jenkins Marine and a Pirates of Poole Committee member.
The 32 foot Cornish gig they will be travelling in is named "Arrypaye" after the infamous Poole captain Harry Paye, regarded by the French and Spanish as a pirate and notorious in particular for the burning of the walled Spanish city of Gijon, after which the people of Poole were famously forced to defend themselves from French and Spanish retaliations. The Arrypaye was launched for the first time earlier this year with the assistance of the Jenkins Marine vessel Kitcat.
John Lambert will be leading the ambitious expedition and says his crew does not have experience in rowing this type of vessel but they have been training since December and intend to raise money for several different causes including The Royal Marines Charity Trust Fund and the RNLI, both of which are represented within the crew and support team. He added;
"We also intend to take letters of apology from the Pirates of Poole to several towns on route as the Spanish and French fleet pillaged several of these on route to Poole in 1406 whilst hunting for Harry Paye and ending up in Poole and burning the town to the ground." You can find out more about The Pirates of Poole, the notorious exploits of Harry Paye and the charity row itself at www.piratesofpoole.com where it will also be possible to read day to day updates from the crew on their progress.
