Multicat workboat ‘Buffalo’
Jenkins Marine are continuing work in Poole, Dorset at the Royal Motor Yacht Club with maintenance and repair to steelwork within the marina. 170 linear metres of steel beams which help to support the marina’s timber wavescreen must be replaced. In addition, much of the supporting steel framework of tubular piles, sheet piles and beams must be blasted clean of any corrosion and protected against further corrosion by coating with a two component epoxy based paint system. Jenkins Marine’s Multicat workboat ‘Buffalo’ is being used as a working platform within the confines of the marina’s berths. With it’s hydraulically operated deck crane proving an invaluable tool to assist in the replacement of the large steel beams of the wavescreen. Buffalo recently underwent a full overhaul during her dry dock in Southampton, October 2007. Works commenced in November 2007, and are expected to complete in early 2008.

36m x 10m spudded deck cargo barge ‘JM 6101’
Jenkins Marine recently undertook and successfully completed marine piling works for North Haven Yacht Club in Poole, Dorset. The works involved the installation of 406mmŘ steel tubular piles on the intertidal foreshore in close proximity to neighbouring properties. The tidal conditions of the site proved to be the most challenging aspect of this project. The average depth of water was only approximately 250mm over the whole site! In addition, a 50t crawler crane was required to pitch the piles and handle the piling hammer.

The solution was to bring in Jenkins Marine’s 36m x 10m spudded deck cargo barge ‘JM 6101’ on one of the highest spring tides of the year. With the 50t crane secured on the deck, together with other piling equipment, the barge only drew 800mm of water and was carefully towed into position adjacent the site and spudded down. The barge was then able to dry out as the tides dropped back, but remain as a stable dry working platform throughout the duration of the works. The piles were driven some 10m into the bed material, then excavated internally and filled with re-inforced concrete. Piles were then topped off with 25mm thick steel plates bedded into the wet concrete and later fully welded to the piles. The piles will be used as the foundations for a new club house for the yacht club. Thanks to the hard work and determination of Jenkins Marine’s staff, works proceeded ahead of schedule and resulted in substantial savings to the client. The works took four weeks to complete and the barge was removed from site on the next set of large spring tides.

Island Harbour Marina
Needles, 300mł self propelled split hopper barge, is currently on charter to Land & Water and working towards completion of a major maintenance dredging operation for Island Harbour Marina on the river Medina, Isle of Wight. Work is tidally restricted, with loading only possible on the high water thanks to Needles’s shallow draft (approx. 1.0m). Spoil must then be disposed of at the spoil ground which gave Needles her name. Works are hoped to be completed by early summer this year.
